Invisible Wealth: A Look Inside Global Trails Student Travel to Costa Rica

What makes a trip truly valuable? Is it the places you visit, the activities you experience, or something less tangible that stays with you long after you return home?

We recently released a new short documentary, Invisible Wealth: A Look Inside Global Trails Student Travel to Costa Rica, offering a closer look at the people, communities, and experiences that make our programs what they are.

For more than 25 years, Global Trails has been bringing students to Costa Rica to experience a different way of life. What started with a love for the country’s incredible natural environment and welcoming culture has grown into something much bigger. At the heart of our programs is the community of Siquirres and Sitio Mata, where students have the opportunity to step beyond the typical tourist experience and become part of everyday life.

The film takes you into the homes of local families who welcome students as their own. You’ll hear from hosts who prepare traditional meals using ingredients grown on their land, share their homes, and build friendships that often last well beyond a student’s visit. For many of these families, the greatest reward isn’t financial. It’s the relationships they develop and the opportunity to share their culture with young people from another part of the world.

You’ll also meet some of the local guides who work alongside our students in Costa Rica’s rivers, forests, and mountains. Through activities like whitewater rafting and canopy tours, students are encouraged to try new things, overcome fears, and discover what they’re capable of. Just as importantly, they get to know the people who call this place home.

One of the most rewarding parts of this work is seeing the transformation that takes place during a trip. Students often arrive feeling nervous or unsure of what to expect. Before long, they’re sharing meals, laughing with their host families, building friendships, and feeling at home in a place that was once completely unfamiliar.

That’s what we mean by invisible wealth.

The value of these experiences isn’t always something you can measure or put into a photograph. It’s found in the connections made, the perspectives gained, and the memories shared between people who might otherwise never have met.

Watch the documentary below to get a closer look at the people and community behind Global Trails.

We hope it gives you a better understanding of what makes these experiences so meaningful, and why we continue to believe that some of the most valuable things students bring home from Costa Rica can’t be packed in a suitcase.
